Overview

LeanData uses a Bring Your Own LLM (BYOLLM) model for supported AI tools. This means you connect LeanData to your organization’s OpenAI account by providing your own OpenAI API key.

Once your OpenAI integration is authorized, LeanData can use your key to power LeanData AI features such as the AI Inference Node in FlowBuilder.

 

Use Cases / When to Use This Feature

Use your own OpenAI API key when you want to:

• Enable LeanData AI tools (for example, the AI Inference Node) in your LeanData environment.
• Keep AI usage billed through your organization’s OpenAI account.
• Support internal security or data governance requirements by managing the API key within your organization.

 

Prerequisites

Before you begin, confirm the following:

• You have access to the LeanData app and permission to manage Integrations.
• You have an OpenAI account with permission to create an API key.

 

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Open the OpenAI integration in LeanData

1. In the LeanData app, select Integrations in the left navigation.
2. In Routing tab, in the AI section, locate the OpenAI tile.
3. Select Get Started.

Step 2: Create an OpenAI API key

1. In a separate browser tab, log in to your OpenAI account.
2. Create an API key (also called an API token).
3. Copy your API Key.

Step 3: Authorize OpenAI in LeanData

1. Return to the LeanData App.
2. Paste your OpenAI API key into the authorization field.
3. Select Authorize OpenAI.

 

Step 4: Select OpenAI as your LLM provider (required for the AI Inference Node)

To use the AI Inference Node with your OpenAI key, you must also select OpenAI as your LLM provider.

1. In the LeanData app, open Admin in the left navigation.
2. Select Settings.
3. Open the AI Tools tab.
4. In the AI Inference Node section, confirm the AI Inference Node toggle is turned on.
5. In the Provider dropdown, select OpenAI.
6. Click Save Changes in the upper right when you are done

Step 5: Use the AI Inference Node in FlowBuilder

After you authorize OpenAI and select OpenAI as your LLM provider, you can use the AI Inference Node in FlowBuilder graphs.

• When LeanData runs an AI action, it uses the OpenAI key you provided to authenticate requests to OpenAI.

Security and data governance

LeanData uses a secure API token-based connection to authenticate with OpenAI.

• Your API key will partially masked and stored encrypted.
• LeanData uses your key when calling OpenAI so your organization can manage access and usage according to internal security and governance policies.
